San Diego Balayage – What is the difference between Highlights and Balayage?

As a San Diego Hairstylist, I talk with clients every week who want hair color that’s easy, gets rid of their grays, looks beautiful, but doesn’t require a ton of maintenance. In this article, I’ll explain the differences between highlights and balayage, what to expect at your appointment, and how to decide if balayage is the right hair color for you.

What is balayage?

You’ve seen the term ‘balayage’ for a while now, but what is balayage anyway? And how does it compare to the normal highlights that everyone gets?

Balayage simply put, means: ‘hand painted highlight’. So balayage IS a highlight, it’s just the technique to apply the bleach is different than normal highlights. You’ll also see me use the term ‘Painted Hair’ this is the “brand” of balayage I do. Yes, in our industry – not every balayage is the same. A lot of what you see out there is “self-taught” balayage. While this art work is good, and most clients don’t know the difference, the artwork I’m doing is specialized, like fine art. ‘Painted Hair’, has unique markers and trade techniques that the average hairdresser won’t know how to do. These trade secrets, create the most beautiful elegant ribbons of light and dark – fine art hair. It’s my signature look. I learned this incredible technique studying under master stylist: Patricia Nikole of @paintedhair.

The result is a ‘rooted look’ that grows out softer than traditional highlights, with almost no grow-out lines. These strong, sometimes harsh grow-out lines are called ‘lines of demarcation’. Many of my clients will come in for their balayage refresh appointment, maybe I haven’t seen them for 5 months, and I am always amazed at how natural and blended their hair looks, no lines of demarcation visible.

Who is balayage best for?

Balayage is best for women who don’t want to be tied to the salon chair every 8 weeks refreshing their highlights. It’s also great for all hair textures. Think of coming in 2-3 times a year to do “The Works Balayage” appointment.

It’s also important to note that balayage is a LESS TEDIOUS appointment than traditional foils. For example: a typical balayage appointment takes 4-6 foils, and 3-4 hours in the salon, whereas a Full foil appointment takes 40-60 foils and 5-6 hours in the salon! One caveat, if you have XXL hair and haven’t been to the salon in over a year, your balayage appointment would be 4-5 hours, or you can split it into two smaller appointments.

I’m always amazed when I’m on social media and I see clients sitting in chairs their whole day getting ‘over-foiled’ . It hurts my heart, I want to shout from the rooftops: “You don’t need to waste your entire day in the salon to get beautiful hair!” You just have to get in my chair, because I am CERTIFIED in the technique of ‘Painted Hair’ Balayage.

Who balayage is not for

Balayage is not for the client who wants a super bright blonde look. Think Christina Aguilera, or Jessica Simpson. These all over blonde looks are created with a million traditional foils and a base color. They use hundreds of foils and countless hours in the chair. Sometimes over multiple sessions. A client has to sit there, and have the stylist “manipulate their head” for hours and hours, to get that super blonde look. The risk of chemical burning to your hair goes way up. And if your natural hair is super dark, many times even hours longer. Balayage is the opposite, a much quicker appointment, with dramatic, yet beautiful results in half the time. That’s why it is my favorite way to color hair!

How traditional highlights work

With traditional foils, the stylist weaves out thin sections of hair and applies the bleach close to the root with a foil underneath to incubate the bleach and make dark hair process light. Thus creating a highlight that is close to the root and offers the most amount of blonde. It is important to note that balayage is not better than traditional foils. They are just different techniques of highlighting – that produce different results. Depending on the goal photo, I will figure out the best plan for my client, according to the goal photo, desired maintenance, and ability to stay in control of the design – so that I can finish on time.

Traditional foils are highlight technique that is easy to do and very repeatable. A relatively unskilled technician can do traditional highlights over and over again on someone’s head. But the key is knowing how much foiling to do, and how much NOT to do, so your client’s hair doesn’t burn off, and they are not held prisoner there all day. Many stylists don’t know this tipping point, so that’s why many clients get OVER-FOILED, and get damage from bleach. Or get that ‘two-toned look’ when their natural hair starts to grow out. Why balayage looks softer as it grows out

Balayage is a more simple strategic way to color hair, one that grows out naturally due to the way I apply the bleach off the root. Painted Hair is elegant, refined and super gorgeous on anyone! How a balayage appointment works

A typical balayage appointment consists of 7-9 services. Most of my clients pay between $350-$600 for their balayage, and the average appointment is 3.5-5 hours.

What to expect at your balayage appointment

You should arrive with STRAIGHT hair that has been prepped. (See my YouTube link below). This cuts down on time in the chair. My moto: ‘Get in – Get out – Get Good Hair’.

• Cut your hair first so I can see where your panels will lay
• Apply permanent color to cover your grays
• Paint balayage foils — long panels of bleach, hand-painted in sections throughout your hair
• Refresh your all-over color
• Process for 20–30 minutes
• Shampoo + deep treatment
• Apply a shiny gloss to your balayage highlights
• Gloss processes for 20 minutes
• Final rinse + deep treatment
• Blow-dry + style

How often do you need to refresh balayage?

Balayage looks best when ‘The Works Balayage’ is done 3X/ year. If your schedule is super busy – plan for 2X/ year. For best results use the salon branded products I recommend (not Trader Joe’s broccoli shampoo for God sakes!). It’s a pretty simple haircolor schedule, come 2-3X/year, with one caveat: If you are covering grays, you’d come more often – every 8 weeks for grays. As far as pricing it’s 2X/ year larger price point, then on root touch day it’s less because I am not doing the full monty appointment. Enjoy soft blended elegant looking hair, that will get you noticed, without taking all day, and doesn’t look like everyone else’s highlights.
